Selinsgrove District 4 football playoff history
District IV's football champions page lists Selinsgrove 16 times, from the 1988-89 school year through 2023-24. The class is 3A through 2015-16, and 4A for 2017-18 and 2023-24. A 1988-89 title is the fall of 1988. Bill Scott's nine are 1988, 1992, 1993, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Dave Hess has 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2014. Derek Hicks has 2015, 2017, and 2023.
The PIAA champions list has Berwick, Berwick, and Allentown Central Catholic as the Class AAA state champions in 1988, 1992, and 1993. The results book that runs from 1988 through 2024 has no Selinsgrove game in those three falls. A district-final score for those years was not in the newspaper pages used here. Every later state game that book lists for Selinsgrove is on the board below, with the score's source.
Under Scott, the state games are a quarterfinal loss to Manheim Central in 2000, 35-51, and another in 2001, 0-36. In 2004 Selinsgrove beat Greater Johnstown 20-7, then lost to Thomas Jefferson 14-20 in overtime. In 2005 the first round was 29-13 over Huntingdon, and the quarterfinal was 7-35 to Franklin Regional. In 2006 it was 48-14 over Bradford, then 14-27 to Thomas Jefferson. In 2007 Selinsgrove beat Bradford 28-0 on Nov. 23 at E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois, then lost the quarterfinal to Thomas Jefferson, 0-28.
Hess's first team played the longest of those state runs until 2009. The 2008 district final was 35-7 over Jersey Shore at Selinsgrove on Nov. 14. The state games were 35-10 over Hollidaysburg, 14-6 over Berwick at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium, and a 7-13 semifinal loss to Archbishop Wood. In 2009 the book has 35-3 over Greater Johnstown, 31-10 over Allentown Central Catholic, and 28-0 over Archbishop Wood. The Daily Item has the Dec. 18 final at Hersheypark Stadium, 10-7 over Manheim Central.
The 2012 state games are both dated. Nov. 24 at Mansion Park in Altoona, Selinsgrove beat University Prep 41-14. Nov. 30 at Frank Banko Field in Bethlehem, Allentown Central Catholic won 41-13. In 2014 the state game after the district title at Jersey Shore was a 14-42 loss to Somerset. In 2015 Selinsgrove beat Greater Johnstown 49-28, then lost to Saucon Valley 7-35.
In 2017 the district final was 34-0 over Shikellamy on Nov. 10. The state games were 37-3 over Bellefonte and 32-33 to Bethlehem Catholic. In 2023 the book has 28-13 over Bethlehem Catholic, 44-14 over Juniata, and a 32-52 semifinal loss to Aliquippa.
District finals that did not produce a Selinsgrove state game, and that have a newspaper score, are on the same board. Shikellamy won the 2010 Class AAA final at Selinsgrove, 35-27. Jersey Shore won in 2013, 20-16, at Selinsgrove; in 2016, 31-15; in 2019, 33-14 at Thompson Street Stadium; in 2021, 41-0; and in 2022, 35-7.
