1926–1942
Selinsgrove football from the first listed season through Bolig
PA Football News starts the Selinsgrove list in 1926, ML Beamenderfer's 0-3 season. Harold Bolig took over in 1927 and stayed through 1942. PA Football News has those 16 seasons at 61-58-13. The alumni hall of fame has the same run at 60-54-14.
The alumni page says Bolig was born Feb. 14, 1904, in Monessen, graduated from Selinsgrove in 1922 and Susquehanna in 1926, lettered in football, basketball, and baseball, taught one year at Duncannon, and returned in 1927 to teach science and coach. It says the first thirty football games were 27-0-3. On the PA Football News lines the opening seasons are 9-0 in 1927, 8-0 in 1928, 8-0-2 in 1929, and 5-0-2 in 1932. Later lines include 0-8 in 1933 and 1-5 in 1942. The page does not list which games make the 27-0-3. The alumni biography says many of those early wins came by large margins. It does not print an individual game score, so the era stays on this page except for 1927.
He attended early clinics taught by Knute Rockne. He married Betty Ulrich Wagonseller on Feb. 20, 1929. A heart condition kept him out of active military service. He worked for the American Red Cross in North Africa and Europe from 1942 to 1944, then was junior high principal for a year and supervising principal of the jointure. He died June 2, 1955, at 51, hours after handing diplomas to the class of 1955. The alumni page says the football field was named Harold L. Bolig Memorial Field for him.
