1943–1966
Selinsgrove football, 1943–1966
From 1943 through 1966 the head coach changed often. Tom Valunas, Dick Smoker, Blair Heaton, Tom Dean, Dick Luttrell, John Anderson, John Shisler, and Barry Fetterman are the names on the PA Football News lines. None of those seasons is a District 4 football champion on the district list, which begins its surviving table in 1986-87.
The best stretches in the table are Tom Dean's 8-4 and 8-3-2 in 1953 and 1954, and John Anderson's 8-3 in 1962. Fetterman's two years, 1965 and 1966, are 2-7 and 1-7-2. Neal Smith was the 1966 captain.
Chet Rowe, class of 1945, played football at Selinsgrove, then played four years of football at Susquehanna after Navy service. In 1999 Susquehanna named him one of the top 100 Crusader football players of the program's first century. The hall of fame does not print a high school game score.
