Neal Smith
DB · Class of 1966 · Penn State · Invited to Washington Redskins camp. He went home to engineering instead.
Neal Smith, class of 1966, was the football captain as a senior. The alumni hall of fame says he walked on at Penn State and, in 1967, became the first Nittany Lion in a decade to start as a walk-on.
The same account says he set single-season and career interception records, played on the unbeaten 1968 and 1969 teams, and was a first-team All-American in 1969. He was invited to Redskins camp and chose engineering. The hall of fame does not list a regular-season NFL game.
